UAB Men’s Soccer Falls Short Against Memphis, 3-2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The UAB men’s soccer team faced a tough loss on Sunday night, falling 3-2 to Memphis, marking the Tigers’ first conference victory of the season. The match kicked off with both teams creating opportunities, but it wasn’t until the 16th minute that Memphis took the lead, courtesy of Samuel Mutiri’s goal, set up by Eben McIntyre and Lucho Galizzi. The Tigers extended their advantage in the 36th minute, with Miller Lashlee scoring his first goal of the year, assisted by Adam Aboohamidi and Galizzi.
UAB managed to narrow the gap shortly before halftime as Gustavo Barbosa converted a penalty in the 43rd minute. The Blazers carried their momentum into the second half, equalizing in the 60th minute when Humphrey Doh found the net, assisted by Tony Kim. However, Memphis responded with a game-winning goal from Saad Chaouki in the 83rd minute, again assisted by Aboohamidi.
Despite outshooting Memphis 20-13 and maintaining 52% possession, the Blazers struggled to convert their chances effectively. Notable performances included Memphis goalkeeper Filip Sabatti, who made four saves, while UAB’s Tom Mabon recorded five. The loss leaves UAB with a record of 1-5-1 (0-2 AAC) as Memphis moves to 2-4-3 (1-1 AAC). UAB will next host Missouri State on September 27 at 7:00 p.m.
