Nationally Renowned Brent Leggs Builds on His Landmark Preservation Work in Birmingham, AL
Reviving Cultural Heritage: Brent Leggs Champions Preservation of Birmingham’s Historic Masonic Temple
Brent Leggs, Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and Senior Vice President at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is spearheading efforts to restore the historic Prince Hall Masonic Temple in downtown Birmingham. Renowned for his impactful preservation work on significant African American landmarks, including Madam C. J. Walker’s estate and the birthplace of Nina Simone, Leggs has been instrumental in shaping Birmingham’s Civil Rights narrative, particularly through his contributions to the A.G. Gaston Motel, now a National Monument.
During a recent seminar, Leggs emphasized the importance of the Masonic Temple, an architectural gem designed by Robert R. Taylor—the first licensed Black architect in America. He expressed sadness over its neglect, stating, “This temple deserves to be treated with the same reverence as Monticello or the National Cathedral.” Leggs has raised over $150 million for more than 400 projects nationwide, focusing on elevating Black culture within American history.
His local connections have strengthened over the past decade, where he witnessed the exceptional stewardship of Birmingham’s Black community. Leggs praised their efforts, stating, “What was so powerful was the way the local Black community organized around the motel.” As he continues his vital work in Birmingham, Leggs’ commitment reflects his belief in the transformative power of preservation and community engagement in recognizing vital cultural heritage.
