Nick Saban Opens Up About Donald Trump’s College Sports Executive Order
In a pivotal week for college sports, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban met with President Donald Trump to discuss the challenges facing college athletics, particularly regarding the name, image, and likeness (NIL) system. Following their conversation, Trump signed an executive order titled “SAVING COLLEGE SPORTS,” aimed at addressing what he described as an "out-of-control" pay-for-play environment, especially troubling in football and men’s basketball.
This order emphasizes the importance of scholarships for non-revenue sports and seeks to prevent third-party financial influence from boosters. On FOX & Friends, Saban expressed his support for the executive order, underscoring its potential to reinforce an education-based model for college athletics. He highlighted the need to differentiate between educational opportunities and professional sports sponsorship, advocating for the former while cautioning against the risks of commodifying college athletes.
Saban raised concerns regarding the financial viability of non-revenue sports, explaining that only football and men’s basketball generate significant revenue to support other athletic programs. He argued for maintaining a broad range of athletic opportunities for both male and female athletes, while also supporting the SCORE Act currently in Congress, which aims to further protect these opportunities.
Alabama’s athletic director, Greg Byrne, praised the executive order, asserting that it promotes a sustainable model for collegiate athletics, ultimately benefitting student-athletes across diverse sports.
