Oxford Secures Fourth Straight Calhoun County Basketball Championship with Win Over Jacksonville
Oxford Claims Fourth Straight Calhoun County Title with Victory Over Jacksonville
In a commanding performance, Oxford’s girls’ basketball team captured their fourth consecutive Calhoun County championship on January 28, defeating second-seeded Jacksonville 58-40 at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The win marked Oxford’s 10th county title in the tournament’s 47-year history.
Led by most valuable player Shay Montgomery, who scored 16 points, Oxford demonstrated their offensive strength throughout the game. Coach Melissa Bennett credited the team’s work ethic as a significant factor in maintaining their dominance, emphasizing that success isn’t defined by a single player. This year, Montgomery, along with teammates Ava Thomas (13 points) and Bri Wilson (12 points), carried the scoring load, adapting after losing standout player Xai Whitfield, now at Tennessee State University.
Despite Jacksonville’s Alexis Phillips leading her team with 13 points and earning the title of most outstanding defensive player, Oxford was able to pull away after a tight first half, establishing a 26-19 lead by halftime. The Yellow Jackets, seeking their first county title since 2012, struggled to keep pace with Oxford’s height and depth.
Jacksonville coach Corey Mize acknowledged the growth of his team, noting their ability to pressure Oxford but lamenting missed opportunities in converting turnovers. With new confidence, Jacksonville looks forward to a potential deep postseason run.
The All-Tournament team featured talents from various schools, with Montgomery and Wilson from Oxford filling key roles, while Phillips represented Jacksonville.
