Alexandria Advances to State Tournament After Dramatic Wins in East Regional Softball
In a thrilling display at the East Regional Softball Championships held at Sand Mountain Park, Alexandria secured its place in the state tournament with three hard-fought victories, culminating in a nail-biting 2-1 win over West Limestone. After an initial loss to Plainview, Alexandria bounced back decisively, defeating Madison County and Etowah with standout performances from pitcher Pressley Slaton.
Allyssa Hunt, one of the pivotal players, attributed part of their success to her “lucky” blue gum, which she chewed throughout the day. “It’s the blue kind, in the little paper wrapper,” she recalled, highlighting the quirky superstition that energized her team. The team’s aggressive play style, as emphasized by Coach Brian Hess, proved crucial in overcoming their earlier setback, demonstrating their resilience and determination to win.
Oxford, Spring Garden, and Jacksonville Christian also excelled, advancing further in their respective brackets. Oxford’s young squad displayed strong teamwork, defeating Homewood and Mountain Brook to reach the winners’ bracket final against Pell City. Meanwhile, Spring Garden and Jacksonville Christian both made significant strides, with Spring Garden winning two games to reach the winners’ bracket final in Class 1A.
The next phase of the tournament will take place in Oxford at Choccolocco Park, as teams gear up for competitive matchups beginning Monday. Alexandria’s journey, marked by perseverance and strategic execution, sets an exciting stage as they prepare for state-level competition.
