Richard Scrushy’s legal ‘bombshell’: Wife claims prosecutors were agents of the devil
In a recent news conference outside the federal courthouse in Montgomery, Leslie Scrushy, wife of former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, accused the prosecutors who convicted her husband of bribery of being “agents of the devil.” Scrushy claims to have discovered new evidence that could overturn his conviction, although she provided little in the way of corroboration for these assertions. Her unwavering faith was emphasized during the conference, where she linked significant dates and names associated with the case to a spiritual conspiracy.
Richard Scrushy was previously acquitted of unrelated charges involving over $2.7 billion in falsified financial reports at HealthSouth. However, he was later convicted of bribing former Governor Don Siegelman in a scheme aimed at securing a seat on the Certificate of Need Review Board. During the press event, Richard Scrushy claimed that evidence indicating corruption within the Department of Justice had been withheld, which could also exonerate Siegelman. He pointed to the evolving testimonies of key witnesses as problematic but did not present any definitive proof or details.
Additionally, Scrushy unveiled a website alleging misconduct and corruption within the DOJ, featuring a whistleblower report from 2009 and a declaration from the late Elmer Harris, former Alabama Power CEO, who suggested that the prosecutions were politically motivated. However, these documents did not substantiate Scrushy’s claims, drawing skepticism regarding the validity of his allegations.
