Saturday Protest Planned in Tuscaloosa Over Trump’s Use of Troops
Protestors to Gather in Tuscaloosa Against Federal Troop Deployment
This weekend, downtown Tuscaloosa will witness a significant protest organized by the progressive Indivisible activist group, titled “We Are All D.C.!” The demonstration aims to express solidarity with those in Washington, D.C., where over 2,200 National Guard soldiers have been deployed since last month, following President Donald Trump’s claims of rampant crime in the capital.
In August, Trump stated that the homicide rate in D.C. was the fourth-highest in the nation, justifying the deployment of the Guard. He has hinted at potential troop deployments in other cities, including Chicago, Baltimore, and New Orleans. Alabama gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville has also shown support for using the National Guard as a crime-fighting measure in local cities like Montgomery and Birmingham.
The protest is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Richard Shelby Federal Building and Courthouse on University Boulevard, coinciding with the University of Alabama’s first home football game of the season. Indivisible has a history of peaceful demonstrations in the area, maintaining a commitment to non-violent action and encouraging participants to de-escalate potential confrontations.
The event seeks to oppose the military’s involvement in domestic law enforcement and aligns with the broader Free D.C. movement, emphasizing the need for community-driven solutions to crime. For more updates on local news, stay connected with the Tuscaloosa Thread.
