SEMO, NIU set for 3-game series in Oxford, Alabama
The Southeast Missouri State baseball team kicked off its new season with a 1-2 record after a challenging series against the University of Memphis over the weekend. The Redhawks will aim to bounce back in a three-game series against Northern Illinois from February 21 to 23, now relocating to Oxford, Alabama due to adverse weather conditions.
Pitching was a highlight for SEMO, with standout performances from returning starters Brian Strange, Sammy Heyman, and Haden Dow, who collectively allowed only three runs and recorded 12 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings. Heyman notably shone, earning Ohio Valley Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week honors for his six-inning outing in which he struck out eight batters. The bullpen also showed promise, achieving 11 strikeouts and allowing just four runs across nine innings.
Offensively, the Redhawks struggled outside of their 7-2 victory in the second game. Left fielder Ty Stauss and first baseman Bryce Cannon delivered commendable performances, with Stauss hitting a grand slam. However, the team recorded only a .181 batting average with 12 hits across the series, posing concerns for their offensive depth.
Head coach Andy Sawyers emphasized the need for a collaborative team approach, citing the importance of selflessness among players. Despite losing key contributors from last season, he remains optimistic about the roster’s depth and talent as the season progresses.
