University of Alabama Students Organize Protests Against Trump’s Commencement Address
Several student organizations at the University of Alabama are planning protests in anticipation of President Donald Trump’s commencement address scheduled for May 1, 2025, at Coleman Coliseum. The speech, which is ticketed and optional for graduates, has sparked significant opposition, particularly from groups like the UA College Democrats, Queer Student Association, and Students for Justice.
Student organizer Devin Daniel emphasized that Trump’s appearance is transforming a celebratory event meant for graduates into a platform for political gain. Protesters express their discontent with Trump’s policies and assert that he represents the interests of the wealthy, which contradicts the concerns of the working class and students.
Organizers anticipate between 5,000 and 10,000 participants across various planned events, including the “Tide Against Trump Rally” at Snow Hinton Park and a May Day march at Government Plaza. Despite the university’s agreement to provide a designated protest area, students have expressed frustration over delays in receiving specific details about the location and logistics.
Drew Scharfenberg from Students for Justice highlighted the importance of collective action, noting that significant social changes have historically arisen from mass movements, not political generosity. With preparations underway, organizers are urging participants to prioritize mutual support and accessibility, ensuring a safe and inclusive atmosphere during the protests.
