Arrest Made in Birmingham Fire Displacing 19 Residents
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed an arrest related to a recent fire that engulfed four buildings and left 19 people displaced. Joshua Mitchell, 42, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on November 1, facing multiple charges, including arson and possession of a controlled substance. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 2.
Firefighters responded to the blaze around 5:30 a.m. at a vacant structure on 20th Street South, which rapidly spread to neighboring apartment and condominium buildings. The fire completely destroyed the original building and caused significant damage to the adjacent structures, which fire officials have declared as “likely total losses.” Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the residents, who were evacuated safely.
The American Red Cross stepped in to assist those affected, providing temporary shelter, financial aid, and emotional support. Although power was shut off during the incident, it has since been restored, with certain streets remaining closed for safety.
Birmingham Councilor Crystal Smitherman praised the quick response of local firefighters, emphasizing the importance of community safety. Council leaders continue to work closely with city officials to assess damages and support recovery efforts, affirming their commitment to restoring the historical area impacted by the fire.
