WKU Cross Country Teams Shine at Southern Showcase
Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) cross country teams showcased impressive performances at the Southern Showcase held in Huntsville, Alabama. On Friday, the Hilltoppers set a remarkable total of 10 personal bests, signaling progress as they advance through the season.
In the men’s 8,000-meter race, Ryan Hendrix led the WKU runners, finishing 89th, followed closely by Mikie Carnell in 106th place. Notably, three athletes—Hollis Johnson, Jake Younger, and Trevor Hudnall—set personal records, contributing to the men’s team’s 21st place finish, improving by two spots from the previous year.
Meanwhile, the women’s team delivered a strong performance in the 5,000-meter race. Junior Kinley Kunkel finished 45th with a personal best of 17:36, leading a group that included freshman Brooke Greenwell, who set her own personal record at 17:52. The team overall secured 18th place, five spots higher than last year, with four athletes finishing in the top 150, compared to only two the previous year.
WKU cross country coach Lee Wood expressed satisfaction with the teams’ progress, noting their increasing strength each week. The squads will take a break before their next competition at the XC Town Twilight on Oct. 3 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
