Toyota’s first U.S. battery plant to power vehicles built in Huntsville
Toyota Launches Its First U.S. Battery Plant in North Carolina
Toyota has officially unveiled its first battery manufacturing plant in the United States, located in Liberty, North Carolina. This new facility, dedicated to producing batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) made at the Mazda-Toyota plant in Huntsville, marks a significant step in Toyota’s ongoing commitment to vehicle electrification. With an investment of nearly $14 billion and the creation of up to 5,100 jobs, it represents Toyota’s 11th U.S. plant and its first battery facility outside Japan.
According to Ted Ogawa, President of Toyota Motor North America, this launch underscores Toyota’s legacy as a pioneer in electrified vehicles and emphasizes the company’s strong investment in U.S. manufacturing. Spanning 1,850 acres, the plant is projected to produce 30 GWh of batteries annually at full capacity and will support a diverse range of electrified vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
The Liberty plant will be integral in developing and supplying lithium-ion batteries for Toyota’s expanding lineup, which includes popular models like the Camry HEV and RAV4 HEV. Additionally, the facility is set to introduce a new all-electric three-row BEV, further solidifying Toyota’s strategy of manufacturing where it sells. This investment not only enhances Toyota’s capabilities but is also poised to have a substantial economic impact on North Carolina.
