Tuscaloosa City Council: Bridge Update, Sidewalk Grant and Toys for Tickets | News
Tuscaloosa City Council Advances Key Initiatives
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Tuscaloosa City Council addressed critical infrastructure issues. A significant focus was on a $21 million bridge relocation project in collaboration with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), aimed at replacing and expanding the existing bridge by adding two more lanes. Discussions highlighted the relocation of sewer and water utilities, with concerns regarding traffic interruptions during construction. Councilman Norman Crowe reassured residents that traffic lanes would remain open despite the work, which is now slated to begin in 2027 and last three years.
Additionally, the council announced a $1 million grant for a sidewalk project on Ash Street, adjacent to the Benjamin Barnes YMCA. This funding complements the $500,000 already provided by the city, promoting walkability in the area.
The council also renewed its popular “Toys for Tickets” program, enabling residents to exchange toys for waived parking fines during the holiday season, running from November 3 to December 4. Last year, 114 tickets were waived in exchange for 102 toys. Councilman Kip Tyner emphasized the initiative’s dual benefit: aiding those burdened by parking violations while providing gifts to children in need. Overall, the council’s decisions reflect a commitment to infrastructure improvement and community welfare initiatives.
