Tuscaloosa Unveils New Burrell Odom Park in Community Celebration
Tuscaloosa, AL – In a spirited ceremony on Wednesday, city officials celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Burrell Odom Park on 8th Street. Mayor Walt Maddox addressed the crowd, expressing pride in the community’s perseverance: “We’re in a time and space where it does feel like opposing forces are keeping anything from getting done, but not here in Tuscaloosa.” He recalled that only 573 days earlier, the park was just an idea, and now it represents a lasting legacy for future generations.
District 1 Councilor Matthew Wilson reflected on the park’s evolution since it was renamed in honor of Burrell Odom a decade ago. “Dreams do come true,” Wilson declared, highlighting the significant transformation the park has undergone. He extended his gratitude to Robert Amason and his team for their dedication to creating a space for the West End community.
Phyllis Odom, Burrell Odom’s widow and former councilor, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support during the special occasion, noting, “My husband is shining down today.” The park’s redevelopment signifies not just a physical space for recreation, but also a celebration of community spirit and resilience in Tuscaloosa. This revitalization mirrors the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces for its residents, signaling a positive step forward for the West End neighborhood.
