Significant Developments at the University of Alabama
The University of Alabama recently announced key initiatives that will enhance its educational offerings and community engagement. Longtime benefactor Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. has established the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. Endowed Professorship in Leadership and Policy with a generous gift of $500,000. This endowment aims to attract and retain distinguished scholars in public policy and leadership, pending approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees in February.
In a notable leadership appointment, Scott Thurmond, who has served as the interim chief since August 2025, has been named chief of the University of Alabama Police Department (UAPD). With over 25 years of experience, including a tenure as chief of the Birmingham Police Department, Thurmond will oversee daily operations and implement policies for UAPD.
Additionally, the Realizing the Dream Committee is preparing for the 2026 event series under the theme “Realizing the Dream Through Faith and Action.” These events celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and feature influential figures from various fields, emphasizing collaborative community efforts.
Upcoming events at the University include a candlelit yoga session on January 13 at the Alabama Museum of Natural History and the Huxford Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition taking place from January 16 to 18 at the Moody Music Building.
These initiatives and events highlight the University of Alabama’s commitment to education, community service, and honoring historical legacies.
