UAB Football Falls to Army at Home, 31-13
Blazers Fall to Army Despite Strong Defensive Play
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB football team faced a tough challenge on Saturday, suffering a 31-13 defeat against Army at Protective Stadium. Despite a commendable defensive performance that limited Army to just 295 total yards, UAB (2-3, 0-2 American) struggled with turnovers and missed field goals, allowing Army (2-3, 1-1 American) to outscore them 21-6 in the second half.
UAB outgained Army, recording 362 yards of offense, including 259 passing and 103 rushing. Quarterback Cale Hellums led Army’s ground attack with 81 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while UAB’s defense featured standout performances from Calvin Pitcher, Devin Hightower, and Jonathan Allen, who tallied 10 and nine tackles, respectively.
The game began with UAB’s first drive resulting in a blocked field goal, and Army capitalized by converting a lengthy 18-play drive into a touchdown. UAB finally found the end zone in the last minute of the first half, with Jalen Kitna connecting on a 47-yard pass to Iverson Hooks, followed by a touchdown catch from Xavier Daisy, leveling the score at 7-7.
However, UAB couldn’t maintain momentum in the second half, as missed opportunities allowed Army to extend its lead. Hellums’ second and third rushing touchdowns solidified Army’s victory. The Blazers will look to regroup next week as they prepare to face Florida Atlantic in an American Conference matchup.
