UA’s Lacquement To Discuss Walker Cemetery For Historic Tuscaloosa Lecture Series
Tuscaloosa Summer Lecture Series to Feature Historic Cemetery Presentation
TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Historic Tuscaloosa summer lecture series is set to continue on Thursday, August 28, with a compelling presentation regarding Walker Cemetery, believed to be the first unsegregated burial site in Tuscaloosa County. This free event, open to the public, will commence with a pre-lecture gathering at 5 p.m.
Dr. Lacquement, the director of undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama’s Department of Anthropology, will delve into the “History of the Walker Cemetery — An Early 19th Century Cemetery of Tuscaloosa.” The lecture will explore the cemetery’s history, burial practices, and preservation efforts. Located near the former Partlow Boys Colony at Munny Sokol Park, the cemetery was rediscovered by a local resident during a geocaching excursion. Lacquement has partnered with UA anthropology students to investigate the site, revealing significant insights into its evolution through the early 20th century.
A North Carolina native, Lacquement holds undergraduate degrees in anthropology and criminal justice and earned his master’s and doctorate in anthropology from the University of Alabama, where he has been a teaching professor since 2014. His research specializes in Southeastern archaeology, monumental architecture, and experimental archaeology.
