University of Alabama at Birmingham offers degree for emerging esports, coach field
UAB Launches First Esports Degree in Alabama
Starting this fall, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will offer a pioneering bachelor’s degree in Esports Performance Management and Coaching, marking it as the first institution in Alabama and the ninth in the country to do so. Teresa Taber Doughty, dean of the School of Education and Human Sciences, emphasized the evolving nature of the esports industry, noting that the closest program for Alabama students prior to this was at Shenandoah University in Virginia.
UAB’s program aims to prepare students for careers in esports, combining academic rigor with hands-on experience. Doughty highlighted a focus on research and infrastructure that supports engaging with esports more formally. An introductory digital gaming class generated significant interest, showcasing the demand for this new curriculum. The program will emphasize the health and wellness of esports athletes, incorporating coursework on nutrition and fitness to enhance performance during extended gaming sessions.
Students will also receive training in coaching, sports economics, and mass media management, equipping them for various roles, including esports commentators. Doughty believes graduates will be well-prepared for related fields like physical therapy or neuroscience.
With existing programs in kinesiology and faculty experienced in gaming, UAB is primed to lead in this burgeoning sector. As esports continues to explode in popularity, UAB is actively informing school counselors about this legitimate career pathway. Students and families interested in the program can contact UAB’s recruitment office for more information.
