Veteran Birmingham police officer named interim deputy chief
New Leadership in Birmingham Police Department: Capt. Raymond Cochran Takes Interim Role
Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has appointed Capt. Raymond Cochran as the interim deputy chief of Patrol Operations for the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), following the retirement of Deputy Chief Onree Pruitt. Cochran, a 36-year veteran with extensive experience, has previously held multiple leadership positions, including commander of the South Precinct, the Narcotics Division, and the Tactical Operations Division. Most recently, he served as the acting deputy chief of Patrol Operations.
In a significant reshuffling, Mayor Woodfin also announced the retirement of Assistant Chief Edmond Hanks. The city has decided not to fill Hanks’ position immediately.
Cochran’s dedication extends beyond his police career; he is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, having served for 29 years, including participation in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. He has completed several military leadership training courses and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Miles College.
Cochran joins the BPD command staff led by Chief Michael Pickett, which also includes Deputy Chief of Administrative Operations Rodarius Mauldin, Deputy Chief of Investigative Operations Jeffrey Brown, and Interim Deputy Chief of Special Operations JaCorey Foster. The department anticipates a smooth transition in leadership as it continues to serve the Birmingham community.
