Huntsville Native Nic Dowd Re-Signs with Capitals
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Washington Capitals have announced the re-signing of Huntsville native Nic Dowd, securing the center with a two-year, $6 million contract extension. Senior Vice President and General Manager Chris Patrick emphasized Dowd’s importance to the team, highlighting his reliability as a two-way player and his leadership both on and off the ice.
At 34 years old, Dowd enjoyed a career-best season, recording 27 points in 81 games during the 2024-25 campaign. Notably, he faced the league’s lowest five-on-five offensive zone start percentage among forwards, showcasing his effectiveness despite challenging circumstances.
Off the ice, Dowd was recognized for his community impact, receiving the Caps Care Community Award for his charitable initiatives. His program, Dowd’s Crowd, further exemplifies his commitment to community engagement. Dowd initially joined the Capitals as a free agent in 2018, and in his seven seasons, he has emerged as a pivotal player, leading the team in face-off wins.
Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round of the 2009 NHL Draft, Dowd has played a total of 581 NHL games, accumulating 176 points. He shares a unique distinction with other players from Alabama who have graced the NHL, marking a noteworthy connection to his home state.
