Wildcats Baseball Coach Named ASWA 7A Coach of the Year
Tuscaloosa County’s Coach Named Top 7A Baseball Coach
Over the weekend, Tuscaloosa County’s head baseball coach, Nick Richardson, received the prestigious title of 2025 Alabama Sports Writers Association 7A Baseball Coach of the Year. This accolade comes on the heels of a monumental season for the Wildcats, who celebrated their first State Championship in May.
The ASWA also unveiled its annual All-State team, featuring three of Richardson’s standout players. Notably, the Wildcats’ first baseman earned First-Team honors, and pitcher Brooks Mellown secured a spot on the Second Team while also being named MVP for the Class 7A AHSAA State Finals. Mellown played a crucial role during the finals, pitching a shutout and contributing two runs to a commanding 7-0 victory over Enterprise.
Since taking the helm in 2020, Richardson has transformed a struggling program, leading the Wildcats to four consecutive winning seasons and two area championships. The program had only secured one winning season in the six years prior to his arrival. His remarkable coaching has paved the way for a bright future, with several key players from this year’s championship team—including Ford Traweek, Jashaun Moten, and Mellown—set to return next season.
