Oxford Reclaims Calhoun County Basketball Supremacy with 24th Title
In a commanding performance, Oxford’s boys’ basketball team defeated Alexandria 66-32 to win the 74th Calhoun County Tournament, marking their 24th title and seventh in the last nine years. The game took place at Pete Mathews Coliseum, where MVP Jaylen Alexander led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points, showcasing a remarkable comeback after a challenging previous season.
Under Coach Joel Van Meter, who celebrated his tenth county title, the Yellow Jackets demonstrated their dominance and depth. Alongside Alexander, Jaylin Taylor contributed 14 points, and Jayden Lewis, named the tournament’s most outstanding defensive player, added 12. Alexandria, on the other hand, faced challenges without senior guard Chris Aguirre, who was sidelined due to a broken arm.
Despite Alexandria’s past success, including their first finals appearance since 2015, the team struggled to maintain its footing in the intense game. Coach Will Ginn emphasized the need for physicality moving forward into the postseason, citing that the refereeing style contrasted sharply with their typical competition.
The victory not only solidified Oxford’s basketball prowess but also highlighted the emotional connection the team shares under Coach Van Meter’s leadership. Reflecting on their journey, players expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from past losses, underlining the heart and hard work that fueled their championship run.
