‘You can kill a man, but you cannot kill a movement’: Alabama holds vigils for Charlie Kirk across the state
Tributes Pour in for Slain Activist Charlie Kirk Across Alabama
In the wake of the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative Christian voice, heartfelt tributes have arisen throughout Alabama. Since the news broke on Wednesday, communities have organized grassroots memorials filled with prayers, candles, flags, and flowers to honor his impactful life.
At Auburn University, hundreds gathered for a spirited vigil where freshman political commentator Brilyn Hollyhand, a close friend of Kirk, emphasized the resilience of Kirk’s movement, stating, “You can kill a man, but you cannot kill a movement.” Similar sentiments echoed in Wetumpka, where over 500 attendees commemorated Kirk’s legacy at the Elmore County Courthouse, with Republican Women of Elmore County President Ashley Carter calling him an inspiration.
Across Huntsville, students participated in a prayer vigil, while Mobile and Baldwin County held candlelight vigils and gatherings led by local pastors, urging the community to continue Kirk’s message. University of Alabama students, too, expressed their grief and called for unity, regardless of political differences.
State Chair of the Young Republican Federation of Alabama, Stephanie Petelos Nabavian, urged reflection on the divisive state of the nation, highlighting the need for dialogue and understanding. A rally titled “WE ARE ALL CHARLIE KIRK” is set for September 17 to further honor Kirk and support his family. Kirk’s legacy is expected to continue resonating strongly in Alabama and beyond.
